Therese Raquin French French Edition Emile Zola 9781490912172 Books

For those of us who love Zola (and any other classic), who like to read literary works in the original French, and who don't want to accumulate more paperbacks (or have difficulty getting them), the Kindle version is perfect. The best of all worlds, really: Classics can be downloaded on Amazon Kindle for free, in the original language, as well as in translated and annotated versions if one desires. Great for students as well. This particular version is in French only, and is not annotated, because I just needed the original text. It is not illustrated. This story, like all Zola works, explores the dark side of human nature. It relates the relationship of two lovers who get caught into a spiral of destruction and self-destruction. Definitely not a rosy love story... Zola's works are not for those who like happy endings! A great French film has been made in the 50s about that story: Thérèse Raquin, with Simone Signoret and Raf Vallone, both magnificent in their respective parts.

Therese Raquin French French Edition Emile Zola 9781490912172 Books Reviews

Seen Park Chan Wook's film "Thirst"? Now read the book and discover why Zola is such an important, controversial and influential writer. Japanese naturalism wouldn't have existed without him
A love story without F bombs Nice change
I like how Zola reflects and streams through the story smoothly. I was hooked from the beginning
I am so happy I finally invited. Zola to my world. He and Gustav Flaubert are ripe romantics What a team; so way head of other realists, and not afraid to toss in a subjective strategy once in a while (II smiled when Zola name - called the murderers.)
Zola's characters are twisted and tortured by unimaginable horrors within the narrow confines of a very small world which they cannot escape. This is not a cheerful read, as the setting is grim and dingy, and so are the characters themselves. What is fascinating is just how awful life can get before something - or someone - breaks.
I was glued to this super-messed up story the whole time! It's just a terrible train wreck unfolding before your eyes. A very well written train wreck. Very much like Greek tragedy, in which you know that the main character is headed for doom from the start. You know this is not going to end well, you are compelled to read on.
This review is for the audio version of the fabulous Emile Zola's "Therese Raquin" novel as narrated by Kate Winslet. One of the best audio books I've ever listened to. The incredible character & scene development that Zola writes and Kate Winslet reads, puts you right there in 1800's Paris. Every dark corner, every neurotic thought, and every blink of an eye is easily comprehended and understood by the listener/reader. If you've ever wondered what went on beneath the quiet facade of a 19th century woman, you should read this book...it's wonderful and chilling.
Therese Raquin is a brilliant study of the human psychology. Be aware that this version is in the original French. The English version is good, but nothing compares to reading a book in its original language. However, this may not be possible for all, as Zola's prose is high-level, with some antiquated French.

Therese Raquin tells the story of forbidden love, but also the story of unintended consequences. It is the picture of the human mind, with the ultimate argument on Zola's part being that human beings, at their very core, are neither good nor bad, they are somewhere in the middle. Through this book, in a setting filled with poverty, death, and relationships, Zola argues that we are, at our very center, animals. We can neither escape nor change our destiny.
BORRADOR
